Not always a sled dog family.... Dig Deep Dogs' foundations were built on the hard working terriers and gundogs that have given their all over the years.
Great pride was taken in breeding and training some of the most honest and hardworking dogs. People would travel far and wide for a Dig Deep Dog. The dogs had a solid reputation for being strong, reliable and conformationaly correct. Meanwhile in the background a small team of scandanivian hounds from the Dig Deep team were achieving great results at dryland sled dog races, and so it began....
Our team consists of Scandinavian hounds who have been imported from Germany and Norway, we are proud to say they come from generations of incredible "Old fashioned" hound lines, which are becoming increasingly hard to find here in the UK.
Scandinavian hounds are wonderfully versatile dogs and can turn their paws to almost anything. They have friendly, playful temperaments and make for great active companions as well as working dogs.
Here at Dig Deep Dogs we believe and understand that for most people at least, dogs are part of the family. We strive to always do "normal dog" activities with our dogs on top of running in harness, this creates happy and confident dogs that are comfortable in lots of situations. It also ensures that the dogs have plenty to keep them occupied in the warmer months when running in harness is a bit more limited.
You may find yourself asking just what is a Scandanivian Hound?
Well in short they are a crossbreed. Scandanivian hounds came about when mushers of alaskan huskies started to look to see if they could make their dogs faster. It is said that they appeared on the scene around 30 to 40 years ago. Now, alaskan huskies themselves are not actually a recognised breed either and can vary greatly in appearance. The beauty of the alaskan husky is that they have been bred over the years purely for performance and not to look a certain way. Essentially any dog that ran well could be added into a breeding programme, so the gene pool is pretty huge.
The hound part, didn't come from as the name suggests hounds, but rather from a pointer, typically German short-haired pointers and English pointers. Although any pointer type was considered, even setters have been used and quite a few hounds can also trace back to some track greyhound heritage also.
What these crosses provided was a faster dog, more tolerant to heat and a little more reliable on the obedience front. As mushers got to realise the benefits of free running their dogs, the pointer mix became more popular as these hounds could be trusted with their freedom a great deal more than their husky counterparts. You could be fooled into believing then that these dogs are essentially mutts, but there has been much thought put in to breeding these fantastic dogs over the years, and pedigrees trace back for decades. There are many different lines of hounds that have been bred for specific distances and certain traits and they all go back to very succesful mushers who founded this breed.
Scandinavian hounds are wonderfully athletic dogs, they have a friendly and inquisitive nature and are highly adaptable dogs who make for great friends as well as working animals.
